Dr. Shield finished his bachelor's degree with honors from University of Rochester and then earned his medical degree from Yale University in 1970. From 1970-76, he pursued his surgical internship, surgical residency and urology residency at Yale University Medical Center. He had the honor of remaining at Yale for an additional year as an instructor of urology.

From 1970-78, Dr. Shield served as a medical officer in the Army National Guard in New Haven. In 1976, he joined Urology Associates of Norwalk.

Dr. Shield is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Dennis Shield, M.D. maintains active memberships in both regional and national medical societies including the American Urological Association and the Norwalk Medical Society.

Peter R. Dodds, M.D.

Peter R. Dodds, M.D.
Soon after completing service in the U.S. Marine Corps, Peter Dodds finished his bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry in 1973. He then earned his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1977. From 1977-1982, he pursued his surgery and urology residencies at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Dr. Dodds is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Peter Dodds, M.D., is the Connecticut representative to the New England Section of the American Urological Association. He is also chief of surgical oncology at Norwalk Hospital and serves on their Bioethics Committee. In addition, he is chairman of the Medical Board at Mediplex Nursing Home.

Dr. Dodds is a frequent lecturer for physicians, nurses and patient groups. From 1982-1987, he was a clinical instructor at Yale University School of Medicine.

Stephen J. Batter, M.D.

Dr. Batter is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Stephen Batter, MD earned a B.A. in biochemistry from Cornell University in 1987. He then went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1992. While in medical school, he was honored with two fellowships for research, including one from the American Cancer Society. He has had research experience at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Harvard Medical School and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Dr Batter's postgraduate training included general surgical training and a Urology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He also was an Instructor of Surgery at MGH/Harvard Medical School after his residency was completed in 1998.

Dr. Batter has numerous clinical interests including BPH, kidney stones and GU cancers. He has been recognized locally for his expert care by being nominated for the Magida award by the Fairfield County Medical Association. He is currently the Chief of Urology at Norwalk Hospital and has been selected for several key positions in the Credentials Committee, Medical and Surgical Executive Committees at Norwalk Hospital. He is a frequent lecturer for physicians, physician assistants and patient groups. Outside of medicine, his passions include his children, tennis, paddle tennis, ice hockey, soccer and fishing.

Scott R. Serels, M.D.

Scott R. Serels, M.D.
Dr. Serels is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Dr. Serels graduated with high honors in 1988 from Brandeis University with a B.A. in biology and economics. He then completed his medical degree at New York University School of Medicine in 1992. He performed two years of surgical residency, followed by rotations in urologic oncology and female urology. He then completed four years of urologic residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in New York.

Dr. Serels then joined the Cleveland Clinic Foundation as a clinical associate and as part of furthering his specialized training. While there, he developed expertise in female urology, neurourology and voiding dysfunction of both males and females. He has published extensively in all aspects of urology, especially on urinary incontinence.

In July 1999, he joined Urology Associates of Norwalk. When he joined us, he founded our affiliated service, the Bladder Control Center of Norwalk, offering a full range of diagnostic and treatment modalities related to bladder control and urinary incontinence.

Jonathan Bernie, M.D.

Jonathan Bernie, M.D.
Dr. Bernie is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Dr. Bernie attended The University of Pennsylvania and received degrees from The Wharton School (B.S. in Economics with concentration in Health Care Management) and The College of Arts & Sciences (B.A. in Biological Basis of Behavior with concentration in Neuroscience).

Dr. Bernie then completed his medical degree in 1997 at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He performed two years of surgical residency, followed by four years of urologic residency, with a strong emphasis on urologic oncology at The University of California-San Diego Medical Center.

Dr. Bernie then spent one year at The Indiana University School of Medicine where he developed expertise in Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery. Dr. Bernie's special interests include minimally invasive treatments for prostate cancer and renal tumors, such as laparoscopic nephrectomy and laparoscopic renal cryoablation. Dr. Bernie has published extensively in all aspects of urology and has received several awards for both his surgical skills and clinical research, including the Laurence F. Green Memorial Award for Meritorious Achievement, presented by the Urologic Research and Education Foundation, and the Gerald P. Murphy Scholar Award of the American Urological Association for distinction in the study of Prostate Cancer.

Dr. Bernie is the Chief of Robotic Surgery at Norwalk Hospital.
